Discussion Questions

Some of the video clip posts contain some general discussion questions for use in the classroom. Each video can be downloaded and used to illustrate certain points, explain scientific background using illustrations and diagrams, as an introduction to the topic of the lesson or a case study.

Some more general questions include:

  • What are the benefits?
  • What are the risks?
  • Whom will the technology/issue affect?
  • What would this mean for you, your family and friends?
  • Why might others not share your views?
    • Give opinions from both sides of the argument – different perspectives

General Scientific Questions

  • What scientific evidence is there for…
  • What does it tell us?
  • What are the limitations of the scientific evidence?

Euthanasia Questions - these can be found with the euthanasia, assisted suicide and mercy killing posts

  • Should we, as individuals, have a right to decide how and when we end our lives?
  • How would this change if we were ‘critically ill’
  • If euthanasia were to be legalized in the UK, how would human life or medical practices be compromised considering what happened in the Netherlands?
  • What is the difference between assisted suicide and euthanasia?
  • If people are able to commit suicide/or attempt and not be criminalized, why should euthanasia be criminalized?

Similar Questions

  • If euthanasia were legalized in the UK, what could be the possible consequences?
  • Since suicide is not against the law, should it be illegal to help someone commit suicide?

Gene Therapy Questions

  • What is gene therapy?
  • When should gene therapy be used?  – just for critically ill patients?
  • What are the good and bad uses of genetic modifications?
  • Is it ok to use gene therapy to improve or enhance a persons genetic profile?

PowerPoint Slideshow Presentation

As an additional part of this project, a slideshow presentation was created on cloning and stem cells. The aim of this was to assist in the teaching of this topic by giving a framework/starting point for a lesson. This can be downloaded and modified here

Each video clip has been viewed and rated, out of 5 stars, according to three criteria: ethical content, scientific content and overall usefulness for teaching.

1 out of 5 stars
Very Poor – very little or no scientific or ethical content

2 out of 5 stars
Poor – briefly touches on the science and ethical content

3 out of 5 stars
Okay

4 out of 5 stars
Good – some explanation of science content without diagrams and covers one side of the ethical content – either for or against

5 out of 5 stars
Very Good – provides illustrations, diagrams and explanation of a scientific process or covers both sides of the ethical argument in great detail

Troubleshooting

Please note the NewsFilmOnline website can be very temperamental – if you cannot access the videos first time around, try again or come back later. Some computers do not like the website at all and will not always login properly.
